Description

Sunday Plus is a bright and upbeat weekly bulletin for today's Catholic. Covering a multitude of topics, Sunday Plus helps readers engage their faith with the often challenging reality of day-to-day life. Written in a popular style, yet underpinned by solid pastoral theology, Sunday Plus is ideal for all Catholics who wish to make their experience of faith truly transformational.

Current Themes:

Rejoice!

Fr Denis Blackledge SJ looks at the readings for 6 March which hone in on forgiveness. He ties in Rembrandt’s beautiful and famous painting of the prodigal father welcoming his wayward son home. James Abbott celebrates Catholic education; and we hear Pope Francis’ words on mothers and the care they give us, including that great mother, the Church.

Justice and mercy

For the fifth Sunday in Lent, Fr Denis McBride reflects on the mercy that Jesus shows in today’s Gospel story, that of the adulterous woman, where we see once again the gift of forgiveness. We continue the theme with more wise words from Pope Francis. Gerlinde Symons, a prison chaplain, sees a connection between the adulterous woman and the people she meets in prison: all have a chance to admit their sins, be forgiven and make a fresh start.

Hosanna!

For Palm Sunday Fr Denis McBride looks at the two processions in our readings, one triumphant, the other painful. He reminds us that the Jesus’ passion doesn’t just mean his suffering and death, but the power that enables him to face the violence and pain. Sr Janet Fearns looks at our use of palms on this special feast day and finds that these may not always be palm leaves, but our own native species – and why not? We finish with G.K. Chesterton’s poem, “The Donkey”.

Alleluia!

On Easter Sunday we shout “Alleluia!” Denise Cottrell-Boyce unwraps the Easter story and the characters in it: not just Jesus, but John, Peter and Mary – and the parts they play. Maggie Doherty continues the theme of Mary, noticing that this was a time for Jesus to use women – usually second-class citizens – as the first witness. Eileen Cole walks the journey through death and finds new life.
